Almost Half of Callers Don't Reach a Person
Invoca analyzed more than 70 million calls and 600 million minutes of conversation across 10 industries for its 2026 Lead Conversion Benchmarks. Only 56% of callers spoke with a person. For calls longer than 30 seconds, the answer rate was 71% (Invoca, July 2026).
The same report found that 42% of phone leads convert on the call. Phone leads are some of the best leads you get, and nearly half of them hit voicemail.
Be Careful With Missed-Call Stats Online
You'll see claims like "62% of calls go unanswered" and "85% of callers who reach voicemail never call back." The 62% figure traces to a 2016 study of 85 businesses, and most callback numbers come from vendors selling answering services. Invoca's data is the largest sample we've found, so it's the one we use.
Work Out Your Own Number
Pull last month's call log and count calls that weren't answered and weren't returned within an hour. Then multiply:
missed calls × share that would have booked × average job value
40 missed calls × 25% × $500 is $5,000 a month walking to whoever answered first. The missed call calculator does this for you.
Three Fixes, Cheapest First
- Missed-call text back. Every missed call gets a text within seconds: "Sorry we missed you, what can we help with?" It costs almost nothing and saves a lot of callers who would otherwise dial the next business.
- Call routing. Ring two phones at once during business hours so the call doesn't depend on one person being free.
- An AI voice agent. Answers every call, day or night, answers common questions and books the job. See what AI voice agents cost.
Setup guides for missed-call text back and call routing are in the KenjiAI help center.
