Can an AI agent answer texts and Facebook messages for a small business?
Yes. An AI agent can answer your business texts, Facebook Messenger and Instagram DMs around the clock, answer common questions, qualify the lead and book an appointment on your calendar. It works best when it answers from your own written business info and hands anything unusual to a person.
Most of your customers already expect to text you. In SimpleTexting's January 2026 survey of 1,000 US consumers, about 86% said they are opted in to texts from businesses, and 74% check a new notification within five minutes. A message that sits unanswered until tomorrow morning goes to the next company that replies.
I've run ads since 2013, and after-hours messages are where small businesses lose the most leads. A person fills out a form at 9 p.m., texts a question, gets nothing back, and books with a competitor before you wake up. An AI agent closes that gap.
What can an AI messaging agent handle, and what should go to a person?
An AI agent should handle the repeat work: answering FAQs, collecting details, qualifying the lead and booking the appointment. A person should handle complaints, refunds, custom quotes, anything legal or medical, and any customer who asks for a human.
| Message type | AI agent | Hand to a person |
|---|---|---|
| Hours, location, service area | Yes | No |
| "How much does it cost?" | Yes, with the price ranges you approved | Custom quotes |
| Booking, rescheduling, reminders | Yes | Only if the calendar is full |
| Qualifying questions (budget, timing, job type) | Yes | No |
| Complaints and refund requests | Collect details only | Yes, same day |
| Legal, medical or financial advice | No | Yes |
| "Can I talk to a real person?" | Confirm and hand off | Yes, right away |
The agent should never guess. If the answer isn't in the info you gave it, it should say someone from the team will follow up, then tag the conversation so a person sees it.
What rules apply when an AI answers Facebook Messenger?
Meta lets businesses use automated replies in Messenger. You can reply freely for 24 hours after the customer's last message, the Human Agent tag gives a person up to 7 days to answer, and where the law requires it, automated chats must say they are automated.
Those rules come from Meta's Messenger Platform policy overview. A few details matter for a small business:
- The standard messaging window is 24 hours from the customer's last message. For a first message after a click-to-Messenger ad, the window can last up to 7 days.
- Message tags only cover approved, personally relevant updates. Using them for promotions outside the window can get your messaging restricted.
- When the law requires it, the chat has to disclose it's automated at the start of the conversation, after a long gap, and when it switches from a person to automation. Meta recommends telling people even where it isn't required.
- If a Page is set up as fully automated, Meta expects it to respond within 30 seconds.
In practice, the AI answers fast inside the 24-hour window, and you stop sending promotional follow-ups through Messenger once the window closes. Move the lead to text or email, where you have their consent.
What do you need before an AI can answer business texts?
You need a business phone number registered for A2P 10DLC texting, written consent from people before you text them first, and opt-out handling for words like STOP. Replying to someone who texted you first is the safest place to start.
Carriers now block texts from unregistered business numbers outright. Telnyx notes that unregistered 10DLC traffic has been blocked since February 3, 2025. Registration has two parts: your brand (legal name, EIN, address, website) and your campaign (what you send, how people opt in, and sample messages with opt-out language).
- Register your brand and campaign, and match the legal name and EIN exactly to your official records.
- Collect consent on every form with clear wording about texts, including automated ones.
- Make sure STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE and similar replies end all texts automatically.
- Keep marketing texts inside normal hours, even if the agent answers incoming texts at 2 a.m.
If the same agent will also call leads, read up on the FCC rules for AI calls first. Calls have stricter consent rules than replies to an incoming text.
How do you set up an AI agent so it doesn't say the wrong thing?
Give the agent one written source of truth (services, prices, hours, policies, booking rules), tell it exactly when to hand off, and test it yourself with real questions before it talks to a single customer. Most bad AI answers come from missing information.
- Write a one-page business fact sheet: services, price ranges, service area, hours, cancellation and refund terms, and what you don't do.
- List your top 20 customer questions with the answer you'd give on a good day.
- Set the handoff triggers: complaints, refunds, custom quotes, angry tone, and any request for a human.
- Connect the agent to your real calendar so it only offers open times.
- Text and message your own business from a personal phone with tricky questions. Fix every wrong answer in the fact sheet.
- Read a sample of conversations every week for the first month and keep updating the fact sheet.
Every conversation should land in one inbox and on the contact record in your CRM, so your team can see what the AI said before they pick up the phone.
How fast should an AI agent reply to a lead?
Within a minute. Speed is the main reason to use an AI agent on texts and Messenger, since leads go cold within the first hour. A fast reply that books a time within the next 24 hours gives you the best chance the person shows up.
The Harvard Business Review lead response study found that companies that tried to contact a lead within an hour were nearly seven times more likely to qualify that lead than those that waited longer. I go deeper on this in why leads go cold.
Booking timing matters too. In our own calendar data over 45 days, calls our AI agents booked went 10 showed and 14 no-shows. Most no-shows were booked 2 to 5 days out, and most people who showed were booked within 24 hours. One no-show came from a wrong time zone on the booking. So have the agent offer the soonest open slots first, confirm the customer's time zone, and send reminders.
KenjiAI includes Conversation AI, an agent that answers texts, Facebook and Instagram messages and web chat, qualifies the lead and books it on your calendar. Every conversation lands in one unified inbox next to the CRM, with automated reminders after booking. We've set this up for 500+ businesses, and you can see what it costs on the pricing page.
What should you do first?
Text your own business number and send your Facebook Page a message tonight after hours, then time how long it takes to get a real answer. If nobody replied within five minutes, start with your fact sheet and your 10DLC registration, then turn on an agent for incoming messages only.
Once replies are covered, set up automated follow-ups for the leads who stop answering after the first message.
